Baba Fareed Ji, also known as Sheikh Farid, was a renowned 13th-century Sufi saint, poet, and musician who lived in the Punjab region of India. He is widely regarded as one of the most important figures in the history of Sufism and his teachings and poetry continue to inspire people to this day.
Baba Fareed Ji was born in 1173 CE in Kothewal village in Punjab, which is now in present-day Pakistan. He was born into a family of Sayyids, who were direct descendants of the Prophet Muhammad. His father was Sheikh Jamaluddin Suleiman and his mother was Bibi Fatima. From a young age, Baba Fareed Ji was known for his intelligence and love for knowledge. He was particularly interested in Sufism, which was a mystical Islamic movement that emphasized the inner spiritual experience of the individual.
At the age of 16, Baba Fareed Ji left his home and began his spiritual journey. He traveled extensively throughout the Muslim world, visiting holy sites and studying with various Sufi masters. He spent several years in Baghdad, where he studied under the famous Sufi saint Sheikh Qutbuddin Bakhtiar Kaki. He also traveled to Mecca and Medina, where he performed the Hajj, the pilgrimage to the holy sites of Islam.
After his travels, Baba Fareed Ji returned to Punjab and settled in the city of Pakpattan. There, he began to teach and spread the message of Islam and Sufism. He attracted a large following of disciples, who were drawn to his wisdom, compassion, and devotion to God. He also composed many poems and hymns in Punjabi, which he used to convey his teachings and inspire his followers.
Baba Fareed Ji's teachings emphasized the importance of love, compassion, and devotion to God. He believed that the ultimate goal of human life was to attain union with God, and that this could be achieved through the practice of Sufi meditation and the recitation of the names of God. Baba Farid died of Pneumonia on the fifth day of the month of Muharram, CE 1266. Baba Farid was buried outside the town of Pak Pattan at a place called Martyr's Grave. He is fondly remembered as the father of Punjabi Literature.
